The New England Patriots are not emerging as an NFL football dynasty, they’ve already emerged and cemented their place in NFL history.

It is difficult to argue that not only have the Patriots already emerged as a dynasty but established themselves as one of the most impressive of dynasties in the history of the NFL. Putting aside their record setting year this year they have a history of the past few years as being the dominant team in the game. Despite the few controversies that have lingered in the shadows with the team, the player and coaching talent is second to none.

Grant it, if they fail to capture the championship this year it will cast a pall on their perfect season. However, I don’t suspect they are going to be remembered so infamously as the Bills of the Jim Kelly era with multiple back to back runs to the big game with nothing to show for it. If the Patriots fail to capture the big prize, and that’s a very big if, it will only diminish their standing as a dynasty mildly. Any team that wins three Superbowl championships two of which were back to back need not prove anything to anyone.

Their post season play since the arrival of Bill Belichick has been nothing short of spectacular. Reaching the playoffs six out of seven years since his reign as head coach is an impressive feat. Three of those years being Superbowl wins and one being an undefeated season. These statistics alone leave little doubt that the New England Patriots have established themselves as an NFL dynasty for the ages.

Why NFL football is popular from a proven scientific standpoint.

Gambling, sports… gambling on sports- all fun things. Lets face it. But have you ever wondered why? Besides the obvious traditions involved with sports, just from a logical point of view, why is it so fascinating and outright fun to watch a bunch of guys you don’t know, have nothing to do with, do something without your help?

Well, cutting edge science has given us the answer.

Simply put, things are better when they are unexpected.

Have you ever gathered in a dark room, with a half smile on your face while you waited for the birthday boy or girl to walk through the door so you can jump out with your friends and yell, “Surprise!” Or have you ever felt the thrill of finding a crumpled up twenty dollar bill in your pocket? Or the sudden conviction that today will be a good day because you won five dollars on a scratch off lottery ticker? All of these things feel great.

But why? Without getting too complicated, lets put it like this. Scientists have found that when something happens that you see as good, your brain releases a “feel good” chemical. Dopamine. And when this chemical is released, everything feels better. You’re smiling, laughing, having a good time.

However, scientists found something else just as interesting. When something good happens that you expect to happen, well, you only get a little dopamine. Eventually, if this same good thing keeps happening, you get none. That thing has become “expected,” “run of the mill,” “ordinary.”

And just as fascinating, when something good happens that was NOT expected, your brain releases a lot more dopamine. So in effect, when something really good happens to you that you didn’t expect, you basically get high as a kite.

So now, keeping this in mind, lets look at sports. You pick your football team, make an emotional investment in them, and then watch the game with high hopes.

The game begins. Nothing much happens. Two good defenses reduce the game to nothing but three and outs. Time drags on. You sip a beer and fill your time with idle chatter, stating your opinions-

BAM!

Interception.

Your star cornerback intercepts the ball and starts streaking across the field. You quit talking and half jump out of your Lazy boy recliner. Your heart is in your chest as he runs to the forty-

the thirty-

the twenty-

your eyes dilate, time slows-

he… could… go… ALL… THE… WAAAYYY!

TOUCHDOWN!

You go bonkers. You’re smiling, laughing, jumping

As usual, the National Football League season will start during the first week of September. The first game will be held on Thursday the fourth of September. The NFL Football Schedule for this year’s season already has most of the locations for the games set up. The games themselves are already set, but the pre-season has yet to get underway. The pre-season will start on Sunday, August third this year. The first game of the pre-season will be between the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Redskins. The first real game of the season will also include the Washington Redskins, but they will be playing the New York Giants in this game instead of the Colts.

The next set of games and teams to play will be kick off on Sunday September seventh. These games already have set locations. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be playing the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans to start off the first weekend of spectacular NFL football. The Saint Louis Rams will be playing at the Philadelphia Eagles stadium as well. On this Sunday the New York Jets will be playing at Miami as well as Kansas City playing at New England. Houston will be playing at Pittsburgh, Cincinnati will be playing at Baltimore, Detroit will play in Atlanta, Seattle will visit Buffalo, Jacksonville will play in Tennessee, Dallas will be at Cleveland, Carolina at San Diego, Arizona at San Francisco, and Chicago at Indianapolis. Tickets for these games are already for sale and can be bought over the internet or at your local Ticketmaster outlet. All these games will be starting around one in the afternoon if you are watching on your television or if you have the National Football League Sunday ticket from a satellite provider. On Monday September eighth Minnesota will be playing at Green Bay and Denver at Oakland. More than one game for Monday Night Football for week one! These tickets are also ready for sale. These are all the games for week one of the NFL football schedule for 2008.

Week two of the NFL schedule for 2008 starts on Sunday September fourteenth. The games held on this day include: Oakland at Kansas City, Green Bay at Detroit, Tennessee at Cincinnati, Chicago at Carolina, Buffalo at Jacksonville, New Orleans at Washington, Indianapolis at Minnesota, New York Giants at Saint Louis, San Francisco at Seattle, Atlanta at Tampa Bay, Miami at Arizona, New England at New York Jets, Baltimore at Houston, San Diego at Denver and Pittsburgh at Cleveland. Monday night football for week 2 will see Philadelphia playing Dallas at their stadium in Texas. All of the tickets for these games are also ready for sale on the internet or at your local ticket retailer. There will only be select games played in certain areas of the nation. So, if you cannot see a game at the stadium or because it is too far away for coverage in your area you can look into a television package like the Sunday NFL ticket so you do not miss out on any of the games this season, and you can get your pro football fix. If you are not able to do this you can always see the highlights of a particular game and find the scores over the internet.

It isn’t only NFL football watchers who suffer from the commercial interruptions. TV is overflowing with advertising garbage, and the virtual smell is getting stinkier every day. When TV first started to come into the home in the late 40s, commercials, which were mostly live at the time, took up no more than a minute or two of each hour’s broadcast.

Today, commercials are not only undercutting the dormant pleasures of couch potatoes who watch NFL games, but also are gradually strangling all of TV. Not even considering the glut of late-night ads and infomercials that hog 100% of every hour with the smirking faces of crooked pitchmen/women, the average prime time network TV hour is stuffed with at least 20 minutes of commercials.

The worst, which defy any sense of logic, are the ones that are repeated every day for weeks and months, often two or three times within the same one-hour program. Somewhere in the bowels of a TV studio or ad agency, the commercials are filmed and the exact same annoying one- or two-minute pitch is aired hundreds of times, in football as well as other sports and prime-time programs.

Some of the worst are the new car ads, with their gruesomely loud MTV-aped audio and video productions. They’re supposed to make us run right out to our crooked neighborhood auto dealer and buy a new gas hog for $30,000, with a $5,000 cash-back offer they’ll never get. I’ve never bought a car because of seeing a TV ad, even if has been pounded into my face a thousand times, and I doubt if anyone else has. As far as I’m concerned, millions of ad bucks are totally wasted on me.

However, just maybe those grossly overpaid NFL players see the ads, and the next day run out and buy another SUV or two to go with their Mercedes and Audis that decorate their Malibu estates.

More and more it seems that NFL games are becoming commercials with a little football action occasionally mixed in. The five networks (including the NFL Network) that now air games are more concerned with squeezing every last cent out of a three hour game than with a fan’s experience.

The worst offender, FOX, has begun airing commercials promoting their TV shows between plays. So now, after waiting through two minutes of commercials after a kickoff, the viewer gets treated to yet another promo for “House” between second and third down. Add this to the incessant little promos for their animated shows, which are displayed on the bottom quarter of the screen during game action, and this network’s coverage of football and other sporting events can get increasingly frustrating.

Following FOX in a close second is ESPN’s coverage of Monday Night Football. After a week of completely asinine commercials that promote the game as if it were a weekly Super Bowl, fans are treated to pointless interviews with “stars” from ABC shows. Instead of discussing the game, the commentators talk with cast members from “Desperate Housewives” or “Dancing with the Stars”. The network is too preoccupied with cross-promoting with it’s parent network while it should be concerned with producing a focused broadcast.

CBS and, especially, NBC have more serious and less commercialized coverage. While they, like any network, still have their fair share of commercials (and they would be foolish to not use the commercial time allotted to them), they do not take time away from the game action to promote their other programming in the way that FOX and ESPN blatantly does. There are few to no commercials during game action or pointless interviews with minor celebrities to take away from what’s happening on the field.

The NFL Network has only aired one game up to this point, so it’s too early to judge it’s coverage. This doesn’t mean that the network is exempt from criticism, as it has tried to pressure cable outlets into picking the channel up on a regular package for a high price that would raise every customer’s rate, whether they want it or not. Their goal is essentially to get every customer to pay extra on their bill for one game a week – a game that would normally cost nothing extra if it was on during it’s regular time.

The networks and the NFL have worked out a plan to try to suck as much money out of a game as possible and if they keep pushing it, fans are going to be more likely to turn their Tivo on, wait 10 minutes and fast forward through all the commercials. They need to cool it with the excessive commercial breaks and focus on stronger game coverage.

There are experts in American Football who are talking about an emerging football dynasty and equate the New England Patriots with this kind of talk.

Personally, I do not view the New England Patriots as an emerging dynasty but as one of the greatest football teams at the present time in the NFL.

It will not be a surprise if the New England Patriots win all of their playoff games and receive the Super Bowl. With this victory in the Super Bowl 2008, The New England Patriots will be the second team after the Miami Dolphins to have a perfect season.

While I am writing this article, I would like to express my congratulations to Tom Brady for being named the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. I would also like to express my congratulations for the New England Patriots on having a great offensive player such as Tom Brady. While a supporter of the Miami Dolphins, it was a crime that the Miami Dolphins rejected a great player of such caliber like Tom Brady.

The New England Patriots have arrived where they are at due to many factors. The discipline and organization of the team is well known and was further reinforced by Bill Parcells. It was also instrumental in helping the New England Patriots win four Super Bowls Number XX, XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX.

The success of the New England Patriots off the field deserves a special mention with the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. The New England Patriots Charitable Foundation has helped various charitable organizations in education, health, and family.

The New England Patriots have come a long way from their humble beginnings on the 16th of November 1959. They deserve their Super Bowl Victory and New England should be proud of this illustrious and prestigious team for their work on and off the field.

The only thing left from this Miami Dolphin fan is to extend his best wishes to the New England Patriots and their supporters in the Play Offs and Super Bowl 2008.

The 2006 season is one the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans would like to forget. Their up and coming star quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, almost lost his life between a motorcycle accident followed up by an appendectomy right before the start of the season. The one stout Pittsburgh defense could not feed off the strength of a 3-4 defense by only managing 39 sacks compared to their own signal caller hitting the ground 49 times. Despite this, the Steelers ended the season with an 8 8 record. If they expect to improve on last year, here are the questions that need to be answered in the upcoming NFL season.

The “Retirement” of Bill Cowher Whether Bill Cowher remains away or he returns within a year or two, Cowher has left his mark on the NFL and the city of Pittsburgh. The man is beloved and treated like a God, thanks to his continual success. Even despite the fact he only managed to win one Superbowl over the course of 15 years, he helped guide the Steelers to playoffs more often than not. First year coach, Mike Tomlin will have some big shoes to fill. What will make this task easier is that this is a team for the most part that won the Super Bowl after the 2005 season. Already people have noted that Tomlin’s training camps have been more physical than those in past years under Cowher. And with the sour taste of 2006 in their mouths, expect the Steelers to start fast out of the gate when they face Cleveland in Week 1.

Change of Pace In 2007 season, you will not see your typical Steelers football. Most fans may feel a bit uneasy when they see Roethlisberger line up with four wide receivers on first or second down. By the end they will like the results of the Bruce Ariens offense. The new offensive coordinator plans on playing to the strengths of his key players and play with a more aggressive nature. The spread formations should create more creases and lanes for Willie Parker to hit the big run. Roethlisberger has already shown improvement during the Spring and expect to see him improve his game dramatically compared to the 2006 campaign.

Return of the Steel Curtain One smart move the Steelers did in the off-season was to let Joey Porter and his 5.5 sacks run off to the Miami Dolphins. Not only did we see a drop in sacks by the defense, the number of forced fumbles dropped from 29 in 2005 to only 13 in 2006. For their 3-4 defense to be successful, the Steelers need to have more production from the outside linebacker position.
